Question: What encouraged you to join IAPSC?
Answer: As a new consultant, I knew I needed to learn practical applications of using my experience and turning it into real world consulting work. I have been part of several professional associations in the security industry, but none dedicated strictly to consulting as IAPSC.
Question: What advice do you have for new and prospective IAPSC members?
A: As either a new consultant or an aspiring one, I can think of no better investment for your professional dollars. We join far too many associations simply because we think we have to in order to become successful. That is not what the IASPC is about. You are not a number and just another membership dues. You are a valuable, respected contributor to the mission and drive of our association. This is one of the best ROI’s you will ever experience!
Dive right in -- do not worry about taking the time to get to know other members, or waiting a while before you “raise your hand” to volunteer. Find an area of the security consulting industry you enjoy and volunteer to take part in its sub-committee or working group.
Q: Describe your most valued member benefit(s).
A: Without fail, the networking and the incredible atmosphere of helping. Now matter what challenge I encountered, there was a fellow member who had successfully dealt with the same issue who was willing to share their experience. It’s not just because the IAPSC is a smaller organization, but the overall attitude of the membership is one of helping your fellow consultant. There has never been a feeling of “competition”, but always one of genuine camaraderie.
Q: What advice do you have for those starting a new venture in the field of security?
A: First and foremost, put the fear of competition out of your mind. There is more business to go around than all of us could handle in lengthy careers. Recognize that you may need help and guidance to succeed. Embrace that and open yourself to teaming with other members. The security industry is an exciting field and the consulting arena is perhaps the pinnacle of our industry. Do not look at this as a “job” but a calling.
Q: How has involvement with the Board affected you personally and professionally?
A: The IAPSC is the living embodiment of the old adage of “you get from it what you put in.” I have never had such a drive to want to contribute, to want to be part of the support that keeps the IAPSC momentum going. Every member of the Board impacts the direction the association moves in and the initiatives it undertakes. To represent our membership is something I hold in high esteem.
